Bacterial Vaginosis — Time to Treat Male Partners

Christina A. Muzny, M.D., M.S.P.H., and Jack D. Sobel, M.D.

This editorial examines emerging evidence supporting the treatment of male partners of women with bacterial vaginosis to reduce recurrence. It discusses a multicenter randomized trial in which combined oral metronidazole and topical clindamycin treatment for male partners was associated with substantially lower bacterial vaginosis recurrence compared with treating women alone. The authors highlight the potential shift in understanding bacterial vaginosis as a condition involving sexual transmission and emphasize the importance of involving male partners in treatment and prevention.
